Two quick things...first, Richard Thompson tickets went on sale today (May 4th) for his show up at the Fitzgerald in St. Paul on June 11th (a Monday night). Should be a great show.

As some of you may have noticed, KMSU was not on the air for this morning's show. We've been off a couple days now for weather-related reasons. We should be back on the air very soon. Thanks for your continued support of the station and the show.

KSMU is off the air.

February 2, 2007

Ice storms are very bad for power lines, tree limbs and radio stations. It appears there is a substantial layer of ice on the KMSU antenna elements, causing something called "reflected power". It is just what it sounds like... power output from the transmitter is reflected back to the source, and it can cause irreparable damage. Very low amounts of reflected power are normal, perhaps one or two percent. We were seeing eighty to ninety percent relected power on our wattmeter, and decided then and there to shut down the system to avoid permanently damaging all of our equipment. I realize that being off the air is not acceptable in nearly any circumstance. This scenario, however, demands that we protect our equipment. Now we wait for the sun to do its work and melt the ice off the antenna elements. I expect we will be back on the air by no later than Saturday afternoon.

Well, 2007 has arrived. Happy new year to all... I meant to post the playlist for the Christmas show, but the holidays got the better of me.

A few non-music topics were mentioned on today's show...

The Anchor Bar in Superior Wisconsin is a wonderful place. Great burgers and an atmosphere in which a guy could write a pretty good folk song. Here's a well written description of the place and here's a Minnesota Public Radio story about the bar and the town (scroll down a few stories and you'll find the story) .


I also mentioned Cheri Register's book Packinghouse Daughter--a great read, especially if you have ties to the Albert Lea/Austin Area (although I don't and still loved the book).

Hey Folks,

I was in San Anotonio for a few days and caught some great music at an authentic Texas place called Casbeers. If you're ever down there, visit the Riverwalk but be sure to get over to Casbeers as well. What a place!

I saw Alejandro Escovedo on Friday night...one of the best shows I've ever seen. Next week's program will feature only songs from Escovedo...

Really is too bad these kind of things get so little support here in town. Maybe 600 people or so...I can't imagine these numbers will keep bands like the Indigo Girls coming to town. Unfortunate.
